As if I don't have enough hobbies....

I'm very excited about our latest project for the sewalong. I've always want to learn quilting and admire beautiful quilts like these. Couple days ago as I was surfing on Flickr, I saw these beautiful quilted bags by Japanese famous quilter Kozeki.

Okay, to all you talented crafters out there. Do you think these quilted bag suitable for beginner? Considering I've very little knowledge about quilting. All I know is you start by creating a design, select the kind of fabric you like, cut the fabric into shapes then you join those small pieces to create an appealing pattern. I've thought about making a log cabin quilt with simple squares for our bed. But a full size quilt seems like too much to take on as a beginner's project, so for now I just want to try something simple. However, I probably won't start anything until I finish my current wips. Until then I should probably get a couple of quilting books so that I can soak up plenty of quilting knowledge before I cut up my pretty fabric. Any good book you can recommend? I'm drooling all over these fabulous Denyse Schmidt Designs. Denyse is known for her simple graphics, rich colors, and quality craftsmanship. Someday it'd be nice to make something like these. Someday....

Quilting can be a time-consuming hobby so it's a great idea to start with something small like a bag or a wallhanging or a pillow. The simpler the design, the more interesting and busy the fabric can be. If you're really adventurous you can freeform the shapes and textures and materials and just see where it takes you. Lots of possibilities!

You might be able to find good sources online for tips and patterns rather than buying a book right off.

I love to quilt. You could totally make the Denise Schmidt quilts. They are big chunky pieces that are easy to piece and you can get a little crazy. I am always happier when I have made something I can use. Although a wallhanging is sweet (I do have some), I think to have a finished product that is for a bed is so wonderful and so exciting-it makes you want to do more and more, and you can do it.

Have fun with fabric and enjoy the process:)

that is such an awsome bag on the cover!! I think you should go for it. It doesn't look like it would take too much fabric so you wont be out much money if it just doesnt work out. By the way, what is the name of that book? Hope it works out for you!

both of the bags would be great for beginners! heck! i'm a beginner too! I wanna make the bag on the right!!!

the bag on the left is just circles appliqued onto a base fabric, easy peasy. the other is little hexagons sewn together; that's my favorite quilt pattern (grandmother's flower garden)

i love the fringe benefits quilt! wow!

I say go for it. If you really love a design your are not going to mind workign hard to achieve the end results.

The first quilt that I made other than old fashion crazy quilts was a quilt that was called Blazing New York. When paper pieced quilts were all the big news. It have 846X4 tiny and I do mean tiny pointed triangle strips in the boarder. So really I feel even a beginner quilter can accomplish anything they put there mind to. Do something you will use and do something you love.

I love the fringe benefits quilt! I think that even if you are a beginner, as long as you follow directions and logically think about it, you can do any of those! It's the same as knitting - it's all just sewing straight lines - it just depends where and when!

I love the bag on the right, I think you could definitely make that!
I have the Modern Quilt-Along book by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr. Even though I love Denyse Schmidt and her designs, I think the instructions in the Ringle/Kerr book are better (at least for me)

I haven't got any advice to offer on levels of difficulty on sewing, but I love all those projects, the bag is so sweet and some of those quilts are to die for.

What a good idea! I don't think quilting is THAT hard, if you can knit, you can quilt. I think. Either way that bag is cool!

these are spectacular!!! i recently completed one of Denyse's quilts, inspired by Wisecraft. I'm very happy with how it turned out and it wasnt overwhelming. Shortly after I finished it, I met someone who shares studio space with her not too far from where I live!
